Recruiters Aren’t Your Agents (That’s Our Job)
TL;DR – Recruiters work for companies, not you. Don’t write them off completely, but spend no more than 5% of your energy on them. The rest should go toward a strategy that will help you never have to look for a job again.
Let’s be honest: recruiters are not your career coach. They’re not your agent. They’re not your friend. They work for companies, and they only really care about you if you can fill their open role.
This isn’t a knock on recruiters, and you shouldn’t ignore them completely, but you should understand what their job is and what it isn’t. Their job is to fill open roles at companies. It ISN’T to get you a job or to get you more money (that’s our job at eStreet Security).
If you’ve been refreshing your inbox waiting for a recruiter to get back to you, here’s your permission to stop. Instead, focus on this:
The “Never Look for a Job in AI & Cybersecurity Again” System
This is the exact strategy we use at eStreet Security, and it can work for anyone in AI, Cybersecurity, IT, and Tech who commits to it, especially if you’re targeting roles in the USA.
Step 1: Target 200+ companies in 30 days. These should be companies where you would genuinely like to work – ones that align with your background and where you want to go, but aren’t just pure pipe dreams. Remember, there are no dream jobs, just better jobs. Be ambitious, but also be realistic. Most careers are ladders, not quantum leaps.
Then, visit these companies’ job boards weekly. Apply to appropriate roles. BUT, only apply to roles posted in the last 7 days.
“But Jem, 200+? Check every week? That is so much work!”
I knew you would say that. The truth is that applying to jobs outside of LinkedIn’s easy apply is a little labor-intensive, but not every company will have new roles each week. Most won’t. Checking takes a few seconds.
Checking each company and applying to the opportunities should take 12-15 hours a week. No more than 15.
Finding a job in AI and Security is a full-time job!
And, I’m sorry to say it, but if you aren’t willing to spend 15 hours a week to get a new job, you don’t really want one bad enough in this fast-evolving, AI-driven job landscape. That’s ok, but that’s what we talk about here.
Step 2: Get “boosters” at as many of those companies as possible. Not just connections—BOOSTERS.
What’s a booster? Someone who replies to your messages within 24 hours and says something like, “Let me look into that role for you.” Basically, it is an advocate within the company. This makes it so you’re not applying cold, you’re being referred by someone on the inside.
